New Years Resolutions Book Tag 2019
New Years Resolutions Book Tag 2019
Hi friends! It’s that time of the year again, the very beginning. Well ish, I’ve been writing this post for a few weeks so it’s already nearly the end of Jan? WHAT. I’ve already talked a bit about my goals for the year but this post is a tag I did last year that is mainly about books and it was a lot of fun, so I thought I’d do it again! I was tagged by the lovely Emma from Emma’s Chapter to do this last year. First I’ll go through my resolutions from 2018 and see if I achieved them, then do this year’s!

Looking at whether I achieved my 2018 resolutions
1. An Author You’d Like To Read That You’ve Never Read
Okay so I really really need to read V.E. Schwab. I know I know, how haven’t I read any of her stuff yet?! It’s madness. I love Victoria and I just haven’t gotten around to reading her work yet… so this year is the year.
I did it! I read two of her books, Vicious and Vengeful. I loved them both and you can click on them to see my reviews for them!
2. A Book You’d Like To Read
Unearthed by Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner on January 9th 2018
Narrator: Steve West, Alex McKenna
Length: 12 hrs and 44 mins
Genres: Young Adult, Science Fiction
Pages: 328
Goodreads
When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.
For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study... as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first. Mia and Jules' different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.
In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race's secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race...
I listened to the Audiobook of Unearthed last year! I still haven’t reviewed it but did a very short wrap up in my Feb wrap up post. Yeah I know, I’m a little bit behind on my reviews
3. A Classic You’d Like To Read
What qualifies as a classic? The only ones I can think of I don’t really want to read. I read a lot in school, and there are so many awesome books I’d prefer not to read a book that I’m that into if I’m honest.
I stand by what I said last year. Didn’t read any and don’t plan to! I’ll remove this question this time I think!
4. A Book You’d Like To Re-Read
There are SO MANY books I want to re-read! It’s so hard to pick just one. Okay so I LOVED this book and I really want to read it again so I can start the whole lot again!
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
Published by Mira Books on September 21st 2007
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy
Pages: 409
Goodreads
Choose:A quick deathOr slow poison...
Yelena has a choice – be executed for murder, or become food taster to the Commander of Ixia. She leaps at the chance for survival, but her relief may be short-lived.
Life in the palace is full of hazards and secrets. Wily and smart, Yelena must learn to identify poisons before they kill her, recognise whom she can trust and how to spy on those she can’t. And who is the mysterious Southern sorceress who can reach into her head?
When Yelena realises she has extraordinary powers of her own, she faces a whole new problem, for using magic in Ixia is punishable by death...
I did re-read Poison Study in 2018, and even re read the next one too! That’s as far as I got though as the novel structures became very repetitive. There’s always a risk of this happening when you read your favourites again, you notice things that you hadn’t before. Sadly, this is what happened here. I probably won’t try again as life is too short.
5. A Book You’ve Had For Ages and Want To Read

But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
I’ve had this on my shelf for a while, oops, and I REALLY need to read it. It’s a hardback which is why I’ve struggled to read it so far, I’m not 100% keen on HB.
STILL NOT READ THIS. GAH. Oops, I know I’ll love it as well. ONE DAY I WILL READ THIS.
6. A Big Book You’d Like To Read
Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive, #3) by Brandon Sanderson Published by Gollancz on November 14th 2017
Pages: 1248
Goodreads
Alternate Cover Edition can be found here.
The eagerly awaited sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling Words of Radiance, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game.
In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.
Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.
Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar's blood-soaked past and stand together--and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past--even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.
I’m still making my way through this bad boy! It’s HUGE. I’m listening to it on audible and it’s taking FOREVER!
Oops. I didn’t DNF this but I didn’t finish it… it’s just a huge book okay? I really will read this again though I promise.
7. An Author You’ve Previously Read and Would Like To Read More Of
Robin Hobb and Terry Brooks! It’s one of my goals this year to read ALL OF THEIR BOOKS. Probably not an achievable goal if I’m honest…
I didn’t manage to read any more of their books this year, noooo! This year? I have some of Robin Hobb’s just waiting…
8. A Book You Got For Christmas and Would Like To Read

9. A Series You Want To Read From Start to Finish
Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor on September 27th 2011
Pages: 422
Goodreads
Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
I really want to read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series! I read the first one YEARS ago and never got around to continuing it. I met Laini at YALC and got my copy signed so I really need to read it again!
I haven’t managed to pick this up again yet, but I did buy the next in the series at YALC last year so I definitely plan to!
10. A Series You Want To Finish That You’ve Already Started
Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard Published by HarperTeen on February 10th 2015
Pages: 383
Goodreads
This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
I really need to finish this series! I loved the first one, the second one fell a little bit flat, BUT I am hopeful that I’ll enjoy the rest.
I haven’t carried on with this series, and to be honest I’m not sure I’m going to? I have way too many books to read without trying to finish a series I wasn’t loving? Though I REALLY loved the first one, so I’m just a bit torn.
11. Do You Set Reading Goals? If So, How Many Books Do You Want To Read in 2018?
Last year I failed at hitting 50, so naturally I’m aiming for 60 this year!
I did it! I ended the year on 67! GO ME.
12. Any Other Reading Goals?
Yes I’m doing the #Read365 challenge and I’m aiming to read every day this year!
I didn’t manage to track this last year, but I did read a HELLUVA lot.

My 2019 Reading Resolutions
1. An Author You’d Like To Read That You’ve Never Read
I’d really like to read a book by Samantha Shannon. I KNOW I haven’t read any of her books yet! I’ve seen her speak at loads of panels but just never managed to pick up one of her books. THIS YEAR WILL BE THE YEAR.
2. A Book You’d Like To Read
After the Eclipse by Fran Dorricott Published by Titan on March 5th 2019
Genres: Young Adult, LGBT
Goodreads
A stunning psychological thriller about loss, sisterhood, and the evil that men do, for readers of Ruth Ware and S.K. Tremeyne
Two solar eclipses. Two missing girls.
Sixteen years ago a little girl was abducted during the darkness of a solar eclipse while her older sister Cassie was supposed to be watching her. She was never seen again. When a local girl goes missing just before the next big eclipse, Cassie - who has returned to her home town to care for her ailing grandmother - suspects the disappearance is connected to her sister: that whoever took Olive is still out there. But she needs to find a way to prove it, and time is running out.
I can’t wait for this one! I’m trying to read a few more mystery/crime books this year and this one is going to be PERFECT. It’s also got LGBTQ+ themes? I’M IN!
3. A Book You’d Like To Re-Read
I’m already rereading Harry Potter… and The Wicked King… I probably shouldn’t reread anymore this year right?
4. A Book You’ve Had For Ages and Want To Read
Ariadnis by Josh Martin Published by Hachette on February 9th 2017
Pages: 356
Goodreads
Back then I thought that if it weren't for that cliff, our cities would be one and there would be no need for all this fierceness toward each other. But then I learned about pride and tradition and prophecy, and those things are harder than rock.
Joomia and Aula are Chosen. They will never be normal. They can never be free.
On the last island on Erthe, Chosen Ones are destined to enter Ariadnis on the day they turn eighteen. There, they must undertake a mysterious and deadly challenge. For Joomia and Aula, this means competing against each other, to end the war that has seethed between their cities for nine generations.
As the day draws nearer, all thoughts are on the trial ahead. There's no space for friendship. No time for love. However much the girls might crave them.
But how you prepare for a task you know nothing certain about? Nothing, except that you must win, at whatever cost, or lose everything.
I’d love to finish this one! I started it but didn’t end up finishing it but I was loving it? So I really have no reason not to finish it.
5. A Big Book You’d Like To Read
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon Published by Bloomsbury Publishing on February 26th 2019
Pages: 848
Goodreads
A world divided.A queendom without an heir.An ancient enemy awakens.
The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction—but assassins are getting closer to her door.
Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.
Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.
Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.
This will tick off two boxes! It’s a GIANT book, and it’s by Samantha Shannon so an author I’ve never read! I can’t wait to read this… it’s just so big I’m a little bit daunted…
6. An Author You’ve Previously Read and Would Like To Read More Of

In a breathtakingly vivid and emotionally gripping debut novel, one woman must confront the emptiness in the universe—and in her own heart—when a devastating virus reduces most of humanity to dust and memories.
All Jamie Allenby ever wanted was space. Even though she wasn’t forced to emigrate from Earth, she willingly left the overpopulated, claustrophobic planet. Now Jamie finds herself dreadfully alone, with all that’s left of the dead. Until a garbled message from Earth gives her hope that someone from her past might still be alive.
Soon Jamie finds other survivors, and their ragtag group will travel through the vast reaches of space, drawn to the promise of a new beginning on Earth. I got this from my TBTBSanta and I’ve actually already read it! The only books I get for Christmas are from Secret Santas… no idea why none of my family get me any haha.

This is a fun way to organize your goals! Hopefully in 2019 you’ll have the time and opportunity to finish those huge books (priory and oathbringer).
I need to read more Sanderson this year, too.
I loved reading this! Good luck with your goals!
