It is said that long, long ago, when the oceans were still black and the sky glowed forever red, the Lord of the Heavens gifted the Lady of the Waves a lump of rock. The land was intended to seduce her, for the sky had looked down at the sea with desire for many years.

But the water was unimpressed with the offering, and took it as an insult, for why should she wish for such a worthless piece of rock to sully her beauty? His passion unrequited, the sky’s love turned quickly to hate, rejection wounding him fiercely. It was anger that made him strike, sending violent storms to force the waves to dance at his command. With one deft blow, he sent lightning to split the land in two, a warning to the ocean to appreciate his attention.

But he underestimated the force of the sea. She raged in fury, for was she not more powerful than the air? With the strength of the water, she lashed at the land, cutting it like ribbon until it lay in twelve fragments. She looked up at the sky mockingly. What use was his gift now as it lay in tatters?

The war between them raged on for many moons, the broken land lying forgotten under an endless cycle of storm and destruction, until they grew tired of fighting, only doing so because it seemed as if they always had.

It was the land that changed everything.

When it finally awoke, to be surrounded by violence, in sorrow it cried out for peace. Exhausted, the sea and sky ceased their raging, and listened to the land, small though it was. The land put forth that if they worked together, they would be stronger than alone, for how powerful would a tempest be if it came from both?

The Lord and Lady cautiously put their differences aside and did as the land suggested. The maelstrom they created made everything in their war appear meaningless, and so they bowed to one another in awe.

In gratitude for the land’s wisdom, the ocean and sky promised never again to attack the land, permitting the twelve islands to remain as they lay. To symbolise their vow, they gifted the land with some of their fire and magic, pouring it into the earth, and diminishing their own to find balance.

And for the longest time, that balance was kept.
