What I’ve read & DNF’d so far 2019

So somehow it’s April? Not even just April… half way through!

Okay. It’s June. Nearly July. This is my third time writing this post and having to amend it. Life has been… a thing this year. SO this is going to be a summary of what I’ve read and DNF’d the last few months, mostly as audiobooks, and a little bit of what’s gone on in my life.

So this year I:

• Got a job
• Had a stall at NYALit Fest
• A piece of jewellery from my shop, Literary Galaxy, was included in Book Box Club’s February box! I’ve been so excited to see people sharing their love for the item and pictures, it’s honestly so heartwarming. I’ll be sharing a post about it soon.
• Wrote quite a lot of my short story
• Left a job
• Starting working for myself and offering blog graphics as well as my Literary Galaxy shop and SEO
• Got another job

& here we are! I’ve been severely lacking in energy & struggling to find time to read physical books and blog. BUT THAT’S GONNA CHANGE I SWEAR.

I LOVED DO YOU DREAM OF TERRA-TWO. It was so interesting & I loved the cast of characters. They had such journeys (literally & figuratively) and I was THERE FOR IT.

Okay so I was pretty late to the Scythe train but I am a CONVERT. I listened to this and it was so amazing, the narrator is great & the story is so compelling. The world building is done so well and I just LOVED IT.

Circle of Shadows was… I enjoyed it for the most part. I gave it four stars but I may downgrade it. There’s some weird paring I didn’t like and the characters didn’t seem to stay true to their natures.

Station Eleven was a random audiobook choice that I LOVED. At first I wasn’t sold, I’ll admit. Mainly because of the shifting in time and POV. BUT it got me. I loved it and was sad when it ended.

WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO READ ARTEMIS? I’ve had this sat on my shelf for so long and I finally decided to get the audiobook and I LOVED IT. I love the main character, she’s amazing and sassy and far from perfect. She’s more of an antihero which I really enjoyed.

After I loved Artemis so much and I loved the film The Martian, I had to try the audiobook and I’m so glad I did. There’s so much to it that didn’t get included in the film, and some super dark elements that I didn’t expect. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.

I was enjoying Off Planet… for the most part. I listened to the audiobook but I just had to stop reading. There was a lot of misogyny, sexism, sexual harassment… & the character didn’t really confront how wrong it was. It made me quite uncomfortable.

YEP. The trifecta.
This isn’t the first time a very popular male author has tried his hand at a YA novel, only to make these mistakes (I’m looking at you, Killer T).
From the girl who has Down Syndrome and is described as ‘moon faced’ and is part of a little sister program that is only there to SHOW THE OTHER STUDENTS HOW FORTUNATE THEY ARE.

I mean, come on.

The female protag is ‘Not like the other girls’ because she shuns makeup and would be so pretty if she tried…
EYE ROLL.
Are we not sick of this sexist trope yet?
GIRLS CAN LOOK FIERCE AND STILL BE DEFIANT AND INTERESTING CHARACTERS.

Oh and of course – all girls but Skye in this school are bitchy, slut shaming, mean gossips who only care about superficial things. Of course. That’s what we’re all like.

OH and apparently there’s some more bullying involving mental health… I haven’t got to that bit and never will but I’m honestly not surprised.

I could go on and on. Part of me wants to continue reading to see how much worse it gets but honestly I have enough to do without reading books that make my blood boil.

Yes I am going to give it a 1 star, even though I haven’t finished it, because it’s appalling that books are still being published with this harmful content.

I REALLY wanted to like Evermore. I really enjoyed Everless but I just couldn’t get into this. The plot changed dramatically, things didn’t really make sense & the characters motivations changed a lot. I just had no interest.

I LOVE THIS BOOK (so far). Why haven’t I continued reading it? As you’ll see as a common trend from the next few books – I just put it down and didn’t pick it back up again. For no reason. I really want to get back to this though, definitely my favourite of the forgotten books.

I was really enjoying this book and the hella ton of diversity. Again just put it down and forgot.
