Lifelike by Jay Kristoff | 5 Star Book Review
Hi book lovers and friends! I’ve been meaning to read this book for SO LONG and I finally did. I enjoyed it so much I read it in one night. I love Jay’s writing but I did have a few issues with the plot… that being said it’s still 5 stars because I really enjoyed reading it!
This will be a spoiler free review as always.

A thrilling new series from Jay Kristoff, internationally best-selling author of The Nevernight Chronicle and The Illuminae Files.
It’s just another day on the Scrap: lose the last of your credits at the WarDome, dodge the gangs and religious fanatics, discover you can destroy electronics with your mind, stumble upon the deadliest robot ever built…
When Eve finds the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend and her robotic sidekick in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, battle cyborg assassins, and scour abandoned megacities to save the ones she loves…and learn the dark secrets of her past.
Lifelike by Jay Kristoff was really enjoyable. I love Jay’s writing and I was NOT disappointed by Lifelike! I’ve been meaning to read it for so long and I don’t know why I waited.
It is set in the future where the world is well and truly messed up, which hits very close to home. I have to say though that the side characters in this book really made if for me. I LOVED the little robot Cricket and the robo dog Kaiser. Ow my heart!
I loved the way this story explored the complex moral ideas around AI rights. From the Lifelikes to the fun robo friends. Do they deserve autonomy? Is the law of robots actually something that should be instated? Who says that human rights are more important than AIs? This book will have you questioning all of that by the end.
I have to say, the ending SHOCKED me. There’s a very big change of opinion of one of the characters, which is kinda understandable after the events that lead up to it, but still shook me. I’m interested in seeing what happens with that in the next book. I also don’t really understand another choice that another character makes… DM me if you want to talk about it!
Lifelike is written in the third person, which works really well for this story as there are many characters to get to know. There is a lot of world building, as it’s set in a futuristic dystopian world, where a lot has changed. The ruins of the world are a very different place to live than the world today. There are also new colloquialisms in this world, which take a bit to get used to. Lemon, Eve’s best friend, uses them a lot.
Jay uses flashbacks quite a lot, and that’s how we learn about Eve’s past. I personally enjoy flashbacks, I think they’re a great technique to impart knowledge on the reader without info dumping. It gives us an insight into what the characters have been through, and also gives us side stories.
In my head, there were a few sections in Lifelike. The short section before SHIT HITS THE FAN, then there’s finding out some big twists, then another section where we have more info. Does that make sense haha? Basically there are different settings to explore in this book.
All in all I enjoyed the pacing, it’s fast with lots of twists and turns, keeping you hooked and wanting to read the next page.
Eve is the main character of this story, and we see her grow a lot. She gets hit with bombshell after bombshell, she’s faced with a lot of adversity and it’s great to see her grow, even though you may not understand some of it. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book with Eve!
I already mentioned how much I love Cricket and Kaiser, they inject humour into the story and they’re honestly brilliant.
I love Lemon Fresh, Eve’s best friend. She is so badass and is such a definable character. I love how she’d do anything for Eve.
I enjoyed the Lifelike’s, we see Ezekiel the most out of them. His love can get a bit annoying at times, but I still enjoy him. I like how we see them ‘mature’, they’re created as young adults but have only existed for a short time, so understandably they have a lot of thoughts and feelings. It’s really fascinating. Also when I found the image above I immediately thought of Ezekiel, so had to include it!
