Sci-fi Recommendations for non Sci-fi Readers
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while (even if you haven’t, let’s be honest), you’ll know that I LOVE Science Fiction novels. If they’re set in space? EVEN BETTER. I’m always recommending Sci-fi books and when this post idea was suggested I KNEW I would love to share it on my blog.
So I’m very excited to share with you this guest post by M.K. England, author of The Disasters, which JUST came out! Keep an eye out for my review coming soon.

Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices. So it’s not exactly a surprise when he’s kicked out of the elite Ellis Station Academy in less than twenty-four hours.
But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy. Nax and three other washouts escape—barely—but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonization. And the perfect scapegoats.
On the run and framed for atrocities they didn’t commit, Nax and his fellow failures execute a dangerous heist to spread the truth about what happened at the Academy.
They may not be “Academy material,” and they may not get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight.
I’ve actually read a lot of the books recommended in this post so I can full heartedly recommend them too! I hope you enjoy.

It’s one of my missions in life to bring more people into the science fiction fold. It’s such a diverse genre; saying “I don’t like sci-fi” is like saying “I don’t like food.” What kind of food do you not like? There are stories set on Earth or in space. There’s sci-fi that’s basically contemporary with a twist. There are books with aliens, and books without aliens, and time travel in the future and the past. Most of all, there’s sci-fi that also fits into every other genre out there, even historical fiction!
Below I’ve compiled a short list of sci-fi novels that are great for fans of particular genres or tropes: Thriller/Horror, Mystery, Romance, Fantasy, Contemporary, Historical, and a bonus category of books featuring academies and contests, practically its own subgenre in YA. The descriptions below are from Goodreads—go add them all to your TBR list!
I hope you’ll consider giving sci-fi a try, including my debut novel, The Disasters, which is great for anyone who likes a good dose of humor and mystery in their sci-fi.
Onward!

Kenzie holds one truth above all: the company is everything.
As a citizen of Omnistellar Concepts, the most powerful corporation in the solar system, Kenzie has trained her entire life for one goal: to become an elite guard on Sanctuary, Omnistellar’s space prison for superpowered teens too dangerous for Earth. As a junior guard, she’s excited to prove herself to her company—and that means sacrificing anything that won’t propel her forward.
But then a routine drill goes sideways and Kenzie is taken hostage by rioting prisoners.
At first, she’s confident her commanding officer—who also happens to be her mother—will stop at nothing to secure her freedom. Yet it soon becomes clear that her mother is more concerned with sticking to Omnistellar protocol than she is with getting Kenzie out safely.
As Kenzie forms her own plan to escape, she doesn’t realize there’s a more sinister threat looming, something ancient and evil that has clawed its way into Sanctuary from the vacuum of space. And Kenzie might have to team up with her captors to survive—all while beginning to suspect there’s a darker side to the Omnistellar she knows.

From the author of The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley comes a brand-new novel about a teenage boy who must decide whether or not the world is worth saving.
Henry Denton has spent years being periodically abducted by aliens. Then the aliens give him an ultimatum: The world will end in 144 days, and all Henry has to do to stop it is push a big red button.
Only he isn’t sure he wants to.
After all, life hasn’t been great for Henry. His mom is a struggling waitress held together by a thin layer of cigarette smoke. His brother is a jobless dropout who just knocked someone up. His grandmother is slowly losing herself to Alzheimer’s. And Henry is still dealing with the grief of his boyfriend’s suicide last year.
Wiping the slate clean sounds like a pretty good choice to him.
But Henry is a scientist first, and facing the question thoroughly and logically, he begins to look for pros and cons: in the bully who is his perpetual one-night stand, in the best friend who betrayed him, in the brilliant and mysterious boy who walked into the wrong class. Weighing the pain and the joy that surrounds him, Henry is left with the ultimate choice: push the button and save the planet and everyone on it…or let the world—and his pain—be destroyed forever.

Great post! I’m actually a huge science fiction genre reader, and these are great books for those who are just starting out in the Sci-Fi genre 🙂
They are a tent they!!
Aren’t they*
Mirage was one of my favorite releases this year. Good pick!
I still haven’t read it yet haha
I am also excited to read Contagion, I have it saved as an audiobook, it sounds like something I would love! And Mirage is already on my TBR. I do have to say that Scifi is a genre I know I would love, but never start reading. Being in a SFF book club does help with that XD
AUDIOBOOK why didn’t I think of that?! I can’t afford to buy it atm but have credits in audible. Huzzah!
It’s the best genre!
Ahh, Sci-Fi Smorgasbord!
Thank You!
💜
I love this post Jenn! So many good recommendations here! I loved Invictus, but I still need to read Mirage even though I’ve owned it for ages! 😉
I haven’t read either of those yet but they’re high on my list!
This is a great post. I’m definitely that girl who says “I don’t like Sci-Fi, ew” but now I’m getting a little more intrigued. This post is a great idea to get more people to read Sci-Fi — I’ll pick up Contagion if I see it in my library!
Ohhh I’m so excited! I hope you enjoy it!
I am a sci-fi fan, but i love these recommendations. It’s nice when sci-fi is blended with some other genres.
Yes definitely! I think I’ll do a post like this with books I’ve read too
This is such a good list! I LOVE how you organized these books. I added them all to my Amazon wish list 🙂
Heart of Iron is a favorite of mine, and quite a surprise
I agree that sci-fi covers a wide spectre of stories, so this is a great post to convince my friends that there’s more to it that “spaceships and stuff”.
Though spaceships are my favourite kind haha
I’ve read Wolf by Wolf and Blood for Blood by Ryan Graudin, but I have yet to read Invictus! I will definitely need to pick that up. The other one that sounds really interesting to me in this list is Across the Universe
💜
Glad to see that Invictus has been included on the list! Such an underrated novel.
I’ve had that one for so long and still not read it haha.
Love these recs! And omg I kid you not, Dare Mighty Things us lying less than an arm’s length away from me!!!
Oooh I hope you enjoy!!

These are great recommendations!!
Thank you so much for this post! I quite recently wrote that I don’t like sci-fi but that I want to try a few books of the genre. This post is a godsend! ❤️
I do know what I like in sci-fi. It’s time travel. Is there a book on time travel that you’d absolutely recommend?
Ohhh Time Travel… The Light Between Us by Katie Khan is really interesting! Has time travel elements in it!
Ooh I just checked out the blurb! It looks interesting. Into my TBR it goes!
Wonderful post! I’m not a huge sci-fi fan, but I loved Defy the Worlds and Invictus.
Thank you! I love Defy the Worlds and have Invictus, I need to read that one soon!
Have you read the other “Defy” books, “Defy The Stars” and “Defy The Fates?”
Yes on Defy the Stars but not Defy the Fates! That’s not out until April D:
Wow, I didn’t realize that! I just knew my library didn’t have it yet. Another book to add to my list!
I had to double check Cos I thought I’d missed it!
This was a fun read; thank you both!
