Betrayal. Sacrifice. Survival.Welcome to the Extinction Trials.

In Stormchaser and Lincoln's ruined world, the only way to survive is to risk everything. To face a contest more dangerous than anyone can imagine. And they will do anything to win.

But in a land full of monsters - human and reptilian - they can't afford to trust anyone. Perhaps not even each other...

Overview

The Extinction Trials is a almost a futuristic world where overcrowding has become a huge issue. Only there’s also dinosaurs, so it’s not quite futuristic (BUT HOW COOL WOULD IT BE IF THERE WERE TO BE DINOSAURS IN OUR FUTURE?!). The humans have no idea how to fight the dinos, and there’s the amazing continent called Piloria which would be perfect to live on, only it’s full of said Dinos. The trials themselves are where each year 100 people get sent to Piloria to scavenge for plant life/food they can bring back to Earthasia and hopefully grow to eat. They’re not overly successful at it and most don’t come back, they did bring this wonderfully bland plant back called cornup though!

This year it’s different, the scientists are after something else from the finalists of the trials, who are a mixture of young/old.

Structure

It’s told from a dual perspective, Stormchaser and Lincoln, which it alternates between in the chapters. I feel like there should be a reason why she’s called that but it never comes out, so I’m still just sat here, wondering. There are different parts, first we get to see what life is like on Earthasia, horrible. No wonder people are willing to risk it all on a trip to Piloria even though most people seem to die there. We then get to see the trials themselves and their time on Piloria, where there’s ALL THE DINOS. I loved it, the dinos even had feathers so points for accuracy there. The world building is so awesome, I won’t go into any more detail, you’ll just have to read it yourself!

Character

The two main characters are Stormchaser and Lincoln. Storm is strong and questions everything, she has a bond with a plesiosaur she’s named Milo who lives in the lake, so has an affinity for the dinosaurs which no one else understands, not that she spreads that around. I liked her character, though she did keep saying she wasn’t sure why she was going to Piloria, she didn’t have a reason like everyone else did, and it kind of made the whole, sacrificing her life for no reason thing a bit silly.

Lincoln on the other hand had a reason to go, and worked very hard to get there. He was weirdly drawn to Storm, which was refreshing as usually it’s the girls who fancy the guys inexplicably, so it was nice to see him obsessing over her instead. There isn’t actually much romance though, though it’s definitely hanging in the air and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the sequels.

The other characters who aren’t such major players are still well developed and have their own stories and drives, which was great. I wasn’t lost on who was who, which made it very enjoyable.
