Hello! I’m Nicole from Nicole The Bookish Cinephile and I am thrilled to share some new and book to streaming service adaptations! The last few years have seen an increase in book adaptations to not only traditional television and cinema formats but also on streaming services including Netflix and Hulu and multi-platform channels like HBO.

Recently Adapted into Films:

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is adapted from Jenny Han’s first novel in her young adult trilogy of the same name. The adaptation was released in August on Netflix as a teen romance and immediately became a huge hit.

Suggested for fans of high school movies, romance, & comedy.

Internationally: Netflix

Fahrenheit 451 is adapted from Ray Bradbury’s classic novel.

The adaptation was released by HBO in May. While this classic novel has been read by generations, the HBO adaptation has some dystopian parallels to current social issues in the USA that make it relevant to modern audiences.

Suggested for fans of dystopian fiction, thrillers, science fiction, and classic novels.

USA: HBO, UK: Sky Atlantic

The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society is adapted from Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’s epistolary novel of the same name. This historical fiction film was released in August on Netflix.

Suggested for fans of World War II history, romance, historical fiction, and mysteries.

Internationally: Netflix

Beautiful Boy chronicles the true experience of a family coping with addiction over many years. Quite astonishingly, the movie screenplay pulls from two related memoirs: one by the father & the other by the son. Nic Sheff’s 2007 memoir Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines chronicles his struggles with addiction & the recovery cycle while David Sheff’s 2008 memoir Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction discusses how their family dealt with Nic’s addiction.

Suggested for fans of nonfiction, memoirs, & literary fiction.

Recently Adapted into a Series

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is adapted from the 2014 iteration of the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman. It is a much scarier and occult look at Sabrina than the 1990s show. A cool note is that the show is in the same universe as the CW show Riverdale & crossovers are confirmed!

Suggested for fans of fantasy, teen dramas, & horror.

Internationally: Netflix

The Miniaturist was adapted from Jessie Burton’s 2014 novel, this mini-series focuses on Nella in 17^th century Amsterdam. Nella is given a replica of her home from her new husband and hires a miniaturist to furnish it and then realizes things are not as they seem.

*Released on the BBC in 2017, The Miniaturist is currently airing on PBS in the USA.

Suggested for fans of historical fiction, fantasy, period films and shows, and mini-series.
