Walking Dead Finale – I’m Fine, We’re All Fine.

This blog post is about AMC’s The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale.

Spoiler Alert!

Rick BloodFirstly, I want to say how happy I am that not only did not a single one of our beloved characters die, one returned to us!

I am talking, of course, about the Rick Grimes that has been absent for a while now. No longer is he a broken shell of a man!

The use of flashbacks in this episode was nicely done, so that in one episode not only did we see the old Rick return, we also witnessed what had caused his departure in the first place.

HumanityRick's eyes

“You can’t keep me from it..”

“From what?”

“What always happens…”

Let’s talk about the moment. You know which one I am talking about. The moment when Rick snapped.

“We’ve all done the worst kinds of things just to stay alive.”

Everyone has become desensitised to the zombies in the show, even the cast themselves. We see Rick, Michonne and Carl’s reactions to a man getting his face eaten by a zombie at the beginning of the episode – whilst they were slightly upset by it, it was nothing to the reaction of everyone when Rick tore into Joe’s neck.

“What the hell are you gonna do now, sport?”

neck bitwWell, rip your throat out with my teeth, of course!

There is nothing scarier than a man who loses his humanity.

Sure, zombies bite and eat you. But they are slow, dumb and they do it because they are hungry and that’s just what they do. What Rick did was different. He knew what he was doing, he made a choice, and it was terrifying.

When he and Michonne both assert to each other that they are in fact fine…. they are so damn far from fine it is unreal, but in terms of the world they are living in, it shows that they are fine with what they have become.

It is Michonne telling Rick that she doesn’t judge him for what he did, and it is Rick telling her that he regrets nothing.

carlNow Carl. At the start of the episode he asks,

“Who are we?”

Referring to the things that they have had to do in order to survive in this harsh world that they are living. This is a sort of premise to what happens after, where they lead us to believe that poor Carl is traumatised by what happened to him/what his father did to save him. We in fact learn that is not the case,

“I still have those thoughts. I’m not what he thinks I am.”

There is no such thing as young, free and innocent in this new world.

 Terminus

Firstly, I’d like to say how I appreciated the use of the flashback to tell us that Glenn had Hershel’s watch, so that when Rick saw it on someone else he immediately knew something wasn’t right.

I mean, come on, it was quite obvious as it was. They had just learnt a lesson about how shitty people are, and yet here they were, trusting again!

I did wonder initially why the episode was titled ‘A’, but there are a few big screaming clues:

A

Something that you may not have noticed on your first watch of the episode, is one of the cannibals shouting A 3

“GET THEM OFF B!”

To which we then hear the response

“Back on A!”

Crackle through the radio.

It makes you wonder, what are at the end of the other routes? As they run past some containers you can hear screams for help, are they unfortunates that travelled down the B path?

carcassesThe quick shot of the bloody human carcasses when they were being herded by gunfire through the facility was nicely done – another hint that they are cannibals.

Enough to make you almost think that Glenn and Maggie’s group had already been eaten.

shrine AIf the message of the episode still hadn’t hit home for them, the writing on the wall in the shrine-like room should have hit home.

Never again. Never Trust. We first, Always.

Also a handy little A there to remind us which route they’re going on.

Train A

Once outside they are directed to enter the train cart, which has a big A on it, letting us know that this is their final destination, all aboard!

Alas! Maggie and Glenn et al are alive! Thus culminates one of the best finale’s ever, without the need to kill someone to hook the viewers. Rick’s last words fill me with a thrill of excitement.

“They’re gonna feel pretty stupid when they find out…  They screwed with the wrong people.”

screwing Shit. Is. Going. Down!
