Fireblood had it’s book birthday last week and I just can’t wait to share my review with you! If you haven’t read the first one, see my review of Frostblood here.
Against all odds, Ruby has defeated the villainous Frost King and melted his throne of ice. But the bloodthirsty Minax that was trapped inside is now haunting her kingdom and everyone she loves. The answers to its demise may lie to the south in Sudesia, the land of the Firebloods, and a country that holds the secrets to Ruby’s powers and past….
Despite warnings from her beloved Arcus, Ruby accompanies a roguish Fireblood named Kai to Sudesia, where she must master her control of fire in a series of trials to gain the trust of the suspicious Fireblood queen. Only then can she hope to access the knowledge that could defeat the rampaging Minax–which grows closer every moment. But as sparks fly in her moments alone with Kai, how can Ruby decide whom to trust? The fate of both kingdoms is now in her hands.
I had to use this gif again because it’s just perfect when talking about Ruby. Now, I was a little bit wary when starting Fireblood, as so often the second instalment to a series can leave you disappointed. Well I’m glad to say that this wasn’t the case with Fireblood! This is a very recent release so I will avoid any spoilers.
Book Structure and Settings
I loved this novel so much. This time we left the icy lands and got to visit firey Sudesia, which brought us new characters and customs to sink our teeth into. Elly Blake is really great at focussing on the bits that matter. She skims over the inconsequential moments, keeping it fast paced and exciting.
I stand by what I said in the last book – you really see the characters grow even more throughout. I was a bit anxious as from the synopsis there seems to be a new love interest for Ruby, Kai. I was anxious because I can’t stand when books make a couple in love fall out for a stupid reason, allowing the new love interest to come in. Thankfully, Elly didn’t do this. I understood and agreed with Ruby’s motivations, and agreed with Arcus’ reactions, even if they were a tad overboard, but hey he loves her so it’s okay.
I loved Kai so so much. First, I am partial to the name as it’s the name I have for one of my protagonists… but also he was just a great character. Cheeky, flirty and fun. So different to Arcus, yet just as enticing.
We got introduced to another badass fire lady – the Fire Queen. Boy oh boy was she a badass. I won’t say too much as I don’t want to give any spoilers, same with the other great characters we’re introduced to. You’ll just have to read it to see what I mean.
Brother Lack’s motivations still weren’t addressed in this novel, so I guess I’ll just wonder about that one, doesn’t look like he’s coming back any time soon.
My assertions from the first review still stand, you need to read this book if you’re a fan magic, fantasy and a teensy bit of romantic tension. Hope you all enjoy!
